ST. john the baptist church, landeck rd. - delphos, oh
St. John the Baptist Church was due for a little work. The church interior looked rather plain and it was time for new flooring and refreshing the pews. Sr. Immacolata Scarogni, SCC began working with Henninger's on a new liturgical program in 2022 to create a more appropriate worship space.
St. John the Baptist has a rich history - over 150 years old, serving its community in Western Ohio. The tapestry of Jesus' baptism was painted in 1873. It hung over the main Altar during the church's construction in 1902. Sadly, two boys lost their lives in that church as it was hit by a tornado in 1948. Their memories have been in the Landeck community ever since and a shrine in the right transept remains in their honor. The mural of St. John the Baptist was untouched during that tragedy in 1948. Henninger's took special care in its transportation from the church to the studio, where it was restored.
Restoring the historic artwork and designing a High Altar to frame it was a primary goal. Adding a new color scheme softened the entire environment. Liturgical elements were included in the paint project, including a repeating cross motif on the border, two newly painted images of St. Michael and Our Lady, and the verse "HE MUST INCREASE I MUST DECREASE" above the Altar.
Sr. Immacolata was integral in the design and execution of this process. Her hard work and vision guided the entire team. The renovated church was dedicated in August, 2024, with Bishop Daniel Thomas and Bishop Elect Dennis Walsh, pastor of St. John the Baptist.
